German Enigma

  • When I first landed in Germany, I could not expect everything including the loss of my luggage. Yeap, it happened. Let it be. I had way more serious problems getting into this country. My luggage arrived, but this time again Germans did not surprise me with their Punktlichkeit.
I have to admit I like Germany. After being here for 2 days I am wondering why does a society that prizes security and order and that seems to have a rule for everything not set a speed limit in its highways? How does such a heavily regulated society manage to attain such economic success in the competitive global market? How could a culture that produces great musicians and artists fall prey to the barbarities of the Nazis? How can people be so sentimental, loyal, and trustworthy on the one hand and be so direct and easy to dislike on the other hand?
I still have not figure it out, but I have experienced it personally but riding without a proper ticket in a subway and wondering how the Germans check the tickets on their public transportation. They don’t. As I was told later, they do it by sending a person on a bus from time to time, but usually they don’t. I was also surprised with German directness and ability to live in tiny apartments and never hear your neighbors. I was already warned by a host not to smash the door load because her jobless neighbor might complain to the public. Overall, your behavior is your personal responsibility and the society expects you to behave and overall they trust you.
Germans are the people who know how to enjoy life and they relax…a lot…and not only by drinking beer. This people love the nature. Today I took a grand tour around Berlin and I would say this city is in the Garden, but not the Garden in the city. Germans created a perfect natural environment (not artificial as in the USA) to live in, to play fooßball or volleyball and bring up their children who actually start liking the beer from very early ages. Germans loves nature and they organize things for the public very often for free. Today, I visited an open air opera in downtown and it was an amazing event that was packed not only with people, beer but also with hundreds of bikes. Oh, forgot to mention, that I have never seen so many bike-riders. Actually, today hundreds of bikers were riding their bikes along bike-paths that go through the whole Berlin participating in the Umweltfestival with lots of organic products and renewable energy models. Again, Germans loves nature and they do not put animals in a zoo in a cage, but I actually could see them through a natural fence along the alley. This astonished me a lot because even though you have to pay to get into the Zoo, I still could see it from the outside and walk along a natural green park.
There are still so many things that I need to figure out about Germany. For example, who the church next to my house does not believe in Holocaust? Why when I come up to some people to ask questions they seem to be afraid of me in the beginning, but then turn out to be great people. Finally, why they do not really like Russians? Is it because they won over Nazi regime or because they are in fact all over Berlin? This and more, will keep my thoughts running.
